Using the reciprocity principle in sales is a powerful double-edged sword

David Kanika

Founder of Yantle

If you want to build a bulletproof process to grow pipeline every single day, you have to master one psychological trigger: reciprocity.

Give people enough value for free and they will feel compelled to give you something back (their time for example i.e. booking a call with you).

While powerful, there are some problems.

First – too many founders confuse free with valuable.

The second problem, more damaging and less obvious – reciprocity works only if you truly give “freely”.

Holding back and expecting things in return creates distrust and erodes conversions.

This is why reciprocity is a double-edged sword.

If applied correctly, it will skyrocket your results.

But if your outbound feels like a cheap trick to “get something” from your leads, it will absolutely bomb.

I’ve built and scaled GTM engines that 10x pipeline that rely on real help, not tricks.

How?

Going orders of magnitude above and beyond of what others would do for free.

3 Things To Win Meetings With Reciprocity

1) Give clarity, not noise
Prospects respond to clarity more than freebies.

A checklist specific to your target account that explains the exact 3 things to reduce churn is worth more than a 40 page e-book no one reads.

Personalization increases value, while specificity signals that you understand the problem and can fix it.

2) Remove pressure from the exchange
Reciprocity breaks when it becomes a lever for guilt.

If your “gift” is followed by urgent demands it feels manipulative.

Be transparent that you just want to show them what’s possible, then let the value speak for itself.

Pressure rarely converts via email/LinkedIn, and ultimately, it will burn your reputation.

What to do: present your help as optional and be clear about next steps without pressure to do it.

Ask for permission to continue the conversation, if they feel this is the right next step.

3) Surprise and delight

When you give your prospect an unexpected gift upfront, with absolutely no strings attached, you disrupt their expectations.

The element of surprise, the dopamine hit, the mix of insights and genuine appreciation of your effort is what makes your outreach stand out.

They’ll feel like a winner; something they’d normally have to pay for lands in their inbox for free!

You stop being another annoying salesperson flooding their inbox and become a trusted advisor.

Ultimately, giving first ensures that even if they aren’t ready to buy today, you are the very first person they will think of when they are.

Apply these principles and your response rates will climb. I guarantee it.

We’ve done this for almost 500 clients in the last 10 years, and it never fails.

We’re using hardwired triggers of human psychology.

While these principles are easy to grasp and can transform your business (and life) in a relatively short period of time, almost nobody commits to executing them consistently.

This is why you have a massive opportunity to outperform your competition, starting today.
